Companies constantly innovate and redesign their packaging to boost performance, enhance sustainability and improve marketability. Here’s a look at three recent packaging developments on Packaging Dive’s radar.

Give it some love

Heinz is encouraging consumers to give its ketchup a big squeeze — or a little one, if that’s what they prefer — thanks to a limited edition, adjustable cap, dubbed the “Love Lid.”

Users twist the cap to the desired setting to customize the product flow to one of three options: “like,” “love” and “crazy love.”

The polypropylene two-part closure changes the product flow as the dial is rotated, explained Packaging World. This is done via an internal core that rises or falls to adjust the flow, not by aligning fixed openings. The cap is a retrofit that consumers can purchase and apply themselves, according to Packaging World.

In the limelight

As Keurig Dr Pepper reformulates its 7Up brand soda to become more lime-forward and switches its description from “lemon lime” to “lime lemon,” it’s also unveiling a new look

The pared back visual branding features a “more distinctive design” and bolder colors, the company said in a news release. In addition, the logo will now be vertically oriented instead of horizontal on cans and bottles.

KDP says the changes across its four main 7Up flavors align with its research showing younger generations — Gen Z and Gen Alpha — prefer boldness and personality. The products roll out this month.

Flipping out

Rev-O-Box launched its proprietary reversible packaging that gives e-commerce and retail shipping boxes a second life as a decorated gift box.

Once consumers remove the product from the box, they can turn it inside out so the printed interior is on the outside. Reuse boosts sustainability by extending the box’s useful life, according to a company news release, and it eliminates the need for gift wrap.

In addition, this product creates a “memorable” unboxing experience that helps retailers differentiate themselves, Rev-O-Box says.
